Confidentiality

All information is treated as strictly confidential and will only be released to others (including family members) with the client’s (preferably written) permission (informed consent).

However, in some situations confidentiality may not be ensured. For example, if it is thought that there may be an imminent risk to the client's safety (e.g., a suicidal client) or a risk to others (e.g., a client expresses homicidal intentions) or the psychologist is ordered to disclose confidential information in a court of law. In these situations it may be necessary to share some information with others to ensure the client’s safety and appropriate treatment, and/or the safety of others, and/or for the psychologist to conform to the law. Confidentiality and informed consent (getting a client's permission) are such important aspects of the psychotherapy (counselling) that they will be discussed in detail at the beginning of the first consultation. Clients will be given ample opportunity to ask any questions concerning confidentiality and informed consent at the first appointment (and at any other time the client requires clarification).
